Prescription Medications for Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are one of the most aggravating and uncomfortable ailments a person may ever have to deal with. Because they can be so persistent, people who suffer from them are constantly looking for ways to ease their symptoms. Over the counter creams and ointments are usually the primary means of dealing with this pesky problem; however, when those fail to adequately do the job, prescription medications may be in order. If you have exhausted the available kinds of creams and ointments available at the drugstore, you might want to ask your doctor about prescription medication for your hemorrhoids.

Anusol HC

Perhaps the most commonly prescribed kinds of prescription hemorrhoid medication is Anusol HC. This medication comes in two different forms: as a cream and as a suppository. The kind that your doctor prescribes is generally completely up to your own personal preference, although you may opt for the suppositories if other kinds of creams have done little to treat your hemorrhoids. Sometimes, though, the location of your hemorrhoids may necessitate the use of the suppository version of Anusol HC.

Anusol HC's generic name is hydrocortisone acetate. This medication works by depressing the release, formation and activity of the cells and various chemicals that cause and exacerbate swelling, itching and pain. Unlike over the counter creams, this medication contains a much stronger dose of corticosteroids, which are the main ingredient that goes to work on the most irritating symptoms associated with hemorrhoids.

People may prefer the suppository form of Anusol HC because it provides longer lasting relief of hemorrhoid symptoms. This is because the medication is released gradually, and not all at one time like many other forms of medication. Personal preference is key when it comes to these medications, though; your results may vary.

Proctocort is the other most popular type of prescription hemorrhoid medication. Available in cream form, it provides relief to the most common - and most aggravating - symptoms of hemorrhoids. Some of these symptoms include itching, swelling and general irritation. It is hydrocortisone based, therefore works primarily to reduce the swelling of hemorrhoids.

Because the hydrocortisone found in Proctocort and similar prescription medications reduces swelling, it in turn reduces the other major symptoms of this ailment. When hemorrhoids shrink, so does much of the pain and itching that are so rampant with this condition. You can only obtain Proctocort with a prescription by your physician, though; make sure that you have exhausted other, non prescription options before trying out this medication.

Other Presciption Hemorrhoid Medications

There is a virtual laundry list of other prescription medications that are essentially the same as Proctocort and Anusol HC, and that provide much of the same relief. Some common names of these include Proctocream HC and Anusert HC. All of these medications rely on the effects of hydrocortisone for their hemorrhoidal relief capabilities. Whether they are used in cream form or as a suppository is generally up to the discretion of the doctor or the patient.

When using prescription medications to treat hemorrhoids, discontinue use if you begin relying on them for more than a week or two. Chronic hemorrhoids may require surgery or other intervention. Consult with your doctor for more information.
